Mount Royal Primary School has taken part in our Well-being activities funded by the WCVA since April 2021 and has been working with Ysgol Y Frenni in Pembrokeshire as part of the Connecting Classrooms Through Global Learning programme. Principal, Sister Limpho communicates every week with our group on WhatsApp and was very happy to share her experiences so far.

Why did you join the project

The project is intended to improve we as the teachers and learners holistically due to the impact of Covid 19. To improve our own way of living with covid 19 pandemic disease. Understand different life situation and move on while coping with challenging situations. Before the project our situation was not easy at all. Teachers, learners and the community’s hearts were torn by covid 19, stress, depression, anger, frustration and financial problem.

Who took part and what activities did you do in your school?

There were 226 leaners and 10 teachers.

We started an English club every Wednesday

This improved our learners with reading, writing and speaking English through reading and dramatizing the story book My Hero is You. Learners can read on their own and can recite and create their drama and story.

We have each Thursday as sign language day – all lessons are taught through sign language

We starting an agricultural activity with our link school in Wales. It also improved our learners’ skills and interest in agriculture. We also once served delicious lunch peas from our garden. It aroused our traditional culture. Now the school environment is cleaner than before. New garden tools, reading material and wireless speaker. Learners use garden tools to plant the vegetables therefore poverty rate will decline.

Who took part and what activities did you do in your school?

Most of our learners are very vulnerable, so some of them are very shy to do the activities because they think that they do not suit them especially when we always take photos to send them to our partner school. We as the teachers we work cooperatively with our learners and take those vulnerable and put them in front, to show them that no matter how hard the situation is, we are equal. No one is better than others and now there is great progress because every most learners are willing to participate.

What was the impact?

We highly appreciated this project because it comes with awareness to technology. Parents are very positive to allow their people to participate. Teachers are motivated and have improved their attendance and punctuality. The school roll has increased our learners speak English everywhere. There are great performances in class, learners do dramas, recite the poems and stories. our learners are feeling at home. There is super comfort. There no late coming at school and no drop out.
