We are delighted to announce that we have been successful in gaining funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. The project is called – Wales as an Outward Looking Nation – The story of St Davids and Matsieng and will be starting in early 2026.
The link between St Davids in Pembrokeshire and the Royal village of Matsieng in Lesotho begun in 1999 and has seen the establishment of a civic twinning committee, many reciprocal visits, countless Royal communications (and even weddings), events, fundraising and strong school partnerships.
This project will collect 30 oral histories, artefacts, and archival materials, to ensure that the stories, experiences, and contributions of individuals and communities—both in Wales and Lesotho—are preserved for future generations.
Culminating in community events and a final exhibition we aim to foster a sense of belonging and pride amongst the city of St. David’s, reflecting on their city’s role in Dolen’s Journey linking Wales and Lesotho, will reinforce local identity highlighting the community’s international connections. This will also encourage intergenerational dialogue, bringing together younger and older people to learn from each other’s experiences.
