Dolen Cymru Lesotho is greatly saddened by the death of our Life President, Dr Carl Clowes. He was a founding member of Dolen Cymru and instrumental in setting up the link between Wales and Lesotho in 1985.
He was ahead of his time in recognising and setting up an enduring link between two countries based on partnership, sharing and mutual learning. Along with a few others in Wales he identified several similarities between the landlocked mountain kingdom of Lesotho in Southern Africa and the mountainous principality of Wales in Great Britain. They have many shared geographical features and similar sized population. Both have been dependent on agriculture and in particular sheep farming. Both have strong local communities, are proud of their language and culture and have a love of singing.
Carl facilitated many exchanges between individuals and groups in the two countries offering life changing experiences. Institutions have been connected. Enduring friendships have ensued. His experience and understanding of culture, language, education, environment and health care has helped shape the projects undertaken by and through the Link
Carl’s love for Lesotho , Wales and their people and the opportunities he helped to provide for many to improve their potential in so many ways and aid understanding about global citizenship lead to his being awarded the highest honour that can be bestowed by the King of Lesotho and being asked to be Honorary Consul for Lesotho in Wales, a post he has continued to hold.
He has remained strongly committed to and been closely involved with the work of Dolen Cymru Lesotho, helping us to focus on mutual benefit and recognising the uniqueness of both Wales and Lesotho in the world.
We are going to miss him immensely and send our condolences to Dorothi and his family who have also shared his interest in Lesotho and the work of Dolen Cymru.
