Mental Health Work Lesotho - Dolen Cymru

Mental Health

Giving mental health the priority it deserves is a problem the world over. Dolen Cymru has worked with the Lesotho Ministry of Health to provide training in the World Health Organisation’s program mhGap (Mental Health Gap) to support health professionals in Lesotho to improve confidence and skills in recognition and management of mental health disorders.

Volunteers undertook need assessment visits to meet, listen and observe practice, talking with health professionals and officials at all levels. They received specific training from an international trainer from the Royal College of Psychiatrists and have provided WHO designed training to front line heath workers and lecturers. This includes discussions on human rights, stigma and cultural beliefs drawing on the experience of the “students”

Dolen Cymru is one of the very few non-governmental organisations helping mental health care in Lesotho.

Over 100 health professionals have been trained, all confirming the value and relevance of what they have learnt. Our programme responds to comments and suggestions made.
